One Of These Is Not Like The Other

My husband and I have always brushed our children's teeth. We feel that it is important to establish good oral hygiene early and we view it as insurance against problems later.
Sean has had this whole week off and therefore we have seen more of each other's brushing techniques and habits. We have a dilemma. One of us feels it is necessary to use an exorbitant amount of toothpaste on each child's toothbrush while the other is much more frugal and is of the mindset that a little bit goes a long way.
The poor children they put toothpaste on their toothbrushes and bring them to a parent. Said parent inevitably sends them back for more toothpaste or they get reprimanded for using too much, it is a no win situation.
What do you suggest? What is the proper amount of paste? When are they capable of brushing properly?

Our kids' dentist says toothpaste is totally uneccessary...we use it, but are definitely in the "less is better" catagory.

A pea size blob. I they should be able to brush themselves by the time they are five. Teach them, check them but they do it.

I let Noah do it and then tell him that Dr. Nicole needs to do a check and I usually end up brushing a little more and always flossing. I think it's so good though that they have limited to none sodas and candy. Noah has never had soda in his life but that is more to do with his pickiness than my doing. I hope he never gets a taste for it though! It's probably also hard with the # you have but I also let him pick out his own toothpaste and that makes it a little more exciting. Wouldn't it make a great stocking stuffer? We love you!

I'm pretty sure it's the action of the brush and floss that does MOST of the work. Not that the anti-cavity-osity ingredients don't have some benefit. And speaking of teeth, I am about to (at the age of 40) to have a baby tooth extracted. So you see, kids, if you brush and floss maybe you can keep yours for decades beyond normal, too. (Just kidding. It's my freak genetics.)
